Overview

Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education (KARE) (Deemed to be University) formerly Arulmigu Kalasalingam College of Engineering was established in 1984 by Kalvivallal Thiru T.Kalasalingam, Founder Chairman who was a freedom fighter and Philanthropist. Kalasalingam is Located at the pristine foothills of scenic Western Ghats of southern Tamilnadu. The college obtained the Deemed to be University status in 2006. The Institution has been serving the society for thirty seven long years and it caters to the needs of the students from all walks of the society. Kalasalingam offers UG programmes, PG programmes and Ph.D programmes in various disciplines of Engineering, Science, Technology and Humanities. It is the first Institution in India to introduce a special B.Tech programme in engineering for the differently able (speech and hearing impaired) students. The Institution has been re-accredited by NAAC with ‘A’ grade with a CGPA of 3.11. Six UG programmes have been accredited by NBA under Tier-1. The Institution continues to do indefatigable work in getting projects and research centers. It has received DST funding to establish the National Center for Advance Research in Discrete Mathematics. KARE has got the state of the art IRC with splendid high end instruments for advanced research in material sciences and life sciences. Multistoried separate hostels with plenty of facilities provide accommodation to thousands of students. The institution has spent exorbitant sum to create a world class swimming pool and indoor auditorium for sports. Furthermore KARE gives utmost importance to Intra- mural and Extra mural activities for the holistic development of the students.

KALASALINGAM COLLEGE OF NURSING (KCON)

  • KARE is located in Krishnankoil near Madurai in Tamil Nadu, India. The campus is close to the ancient temple town of Srivilliputtur. KARE (formerly Arulmigu Kalasalingam College of Engineering) was established in the year 1984 by the Kalasalingam Anandam Ammal Charities. “Kalvivallal” Thiru T. Kalasalingam, veteran freedom fighter, is the founder Chairman. The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, New Delhi granted University status. Institutions declared under this section are deemed to be universities. Along with the milestone of KARE Emerging Kalasalingam college of Nursing started in the year 2022-23 aims at preparing Nurses for Highly Technically competent and professional standards with a sense of discipline. The college of Nursing is equipped with the Kalasalingam Medical College and Hospital. Our parent Multi specialty hospital within the campus offer a wide variety of clinical practice. Students are posted in the hospital for the clinical hours according to their curriculum requirements.
  • Classrooms The dedicated classrooms are spaciously designed furnished with necessary technical teaching aids like audio-visual facilities. With the nursing science growing every year, the need for professional and well-trained individuals in the industry has grown exponentially. Our student centric learning approach aims to train our students to get started on an exciting and successful career in the field of nursing.
  • Laboratory Each department of the Nursing College has separate laboratories that are fully equipped. All the laboratories are equipped with Mannequins, Simulators, Models, Specimens, Audio Visual Aids, computers and necessary articles for procedure demonstration.
  • Nursing Laboratory The nursing college has well equipped and well-ventilated laboratories such as Nursing Foundation Lab, Maternal and Child Health Nursing Lab, Community Health Nursing Lab, Nutrition Lab, AV Aids Lab, Advanced Nursing/Skills Lab and Computer Lab, to provide the students hands on training in respective specialties.
  • Examination Hall Spacious and comfortable air-conditioned Examination Halls are available.
  • Auditorium An air-conditioned auditorium with acoustics of International standards and a seating capacity of over 1500 is available for all special functions of the University. In addition, a Mini auditorium with a seating capacity of about 500 is also available.
  • Library The Central Library was started along with the institution in the year 1984. It is a two storied building built on a built-up area of more than one lakh square feet and fully air-conditioned with the seating capacity to accommodate more than 1000 users at a time. It has more than 98,000 volumes of books in various domains such as engineering, management, advanced sciences, life sciences and agriculture and general. The library subscribes to 412 periodicals in print at national and international level. Besides, the library has 3383 bound volumes of periodicals, 5708 Project Reports. E-resources comprising of more than 4000 e-journals from IEEE, Science Direct, DLINE, SAGE etc and more than 36000 e-books from Springer and ProQuest are subscribed. Access to Scopus, India Business Insight Database and RAxter Research discovery tool is facilitated. Video and web courses developed by IITs under NPTEL have been procured and access to the contents is provided over the campus network. Institutional Digital Repository – has been created using Open Source Software ‘DSpace’ for disseminating the scholarly contents created at our institution and access is given through intranet. The digital versions of the Ph.D. theses submitted to the institution are uploaded in the INFLIBNET Shodhganga repository, a reservoir of Indian theses, to provide seamless access to the research community. Plagiarism detection systems such as URKUND and iThenticate are made available for promoting the authentic, genuine and quality research works. Newspapers are subscribed in English and Tamil languages to keep our users abreast with the news and current affairs of the national and international importance. Library services have been automated through Library Automation Software ‘KOHA’ (Version 19.05), a full-featured Open Source Integrated Library System (ILS). It is browser-based, interactive, user-friendly software, designed to meet the user’s needs. The services provided by the library include Lending service, Reference service, Inter Library Loan, Internet Browsing, Current Awareness Service (CAS), and Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) Service.
  • Sports Kalasalingam believes sports activities (both indoor and outdoor) are essential in keeping the health and mind healthy and stay strong. Our institute give special emphasis for sports students by giving scholarship and by training them continuously to bring more laurels to our institute and to the student as a individual, as a success of this process many students are placed in government job.
  • Student Affairs Our students have developed software that helps in the learning process of hearing-impaired people. Our students have also developed software for Exam Administration System (EASY), Attendance Information Systems (AIMS), Student Information System (SIS), Staff Attendance and Leave Transaction (SALT), Students SMS (S-SMS), Online Registration System (OCRS) Hostel Management System, Finance Management System, Health Center Management and Biometric Based Attendance Monitoring System for staff. These soft wares are currently used in our University. Moreover, our students have also developed school automation software as per the needs of schools. Competitions Students are motivated to participate in department association activities like quizzes, paper presentations, etc. Moreover, they are allowed to participate in inter and intra collegiate to equip them with today’s competitive world.
  • Transport The Institution has a fleet of 40 buses and two vans to transport students and staff members. The bus terminus includes Krishnankoil, Srivilliputtur, Rajapalayam, Sivakasi, Madurai, Watrap, and Institution campus. Besides the regular scheduled trips, the facility is extended for occasions like after the college hour Special Coaching Classes, Visit to Local Industries, hospitals, NSS Camps, etc.
  • Hostel One of the key contributors to an intensive learning experience is living in campus. Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education (KARE) has a residential facility on campus for the students. A well-furnished and artistically designed hostels with separate buildings for boys and girls has been constructed with a view to provide best possible facilities to the students. All the Hostels are located inside the same campus and are under the surveillance of CCTV camera and provides safe

    environment for both boys and girls.

  • Recreation To encourage extra-curricular activities and to ensure a healthy, stress-free life, the University has made sincere efforts to build several sports facilities for the students. The University has basketball court, cricket ground, tennis court, football ground as well as facilities for indoor games namely chess, carom, table tennis and badminton. There are two ultra modern indoor stadia. A swimming pool with life guards is available in the boys hostel campus.

  • Students Store To meet all the basic needs and stationery requirements of the students, a utility shop is available within the campus. A beauty parlour is also available within the campus.
  • Campus Security At KARE, safety and security of our students is of prime importance. Hence, I.T. based security initiatives have been taken to ensure continuous surveillance. The campus is covered with CCTV cameras monitored round the clock to alert on any security incident. The college areas are secured by turnstile gates and boom barriers to physically restrict non-campus personnel having free access to the student areas.
  • Attendance Monitoring Attendance Management System with KALVI Portal in the online. Demo Halls, Laboratories, Libraries and Student Posting Wards to ensure secure attendance monitoring. Attendance Management system has in-built facility of to see the automatic to parents / guardians of the students.

Programmes Offered

Undergraduate B.Sc. Nursing – 4 Year including internship The B.Sc. nursing degree program is a four-year fulltime program comprising eight semesters, which prepares a student to become a registered nurse qualified to practice in a variety of settings in either public/ government or private healthcare settings. It adopts credit system and semester system as per UGC guidelines. The program encompasses foundational, core and elective courses. The choice-based system is applicable to electives only and is offered in the form of modules. Modular learning is also integrated in the foundational as well as core courses that are mandatory.

The program prepares nurses for generalist nursing practice. Knowledge acquisition related to wellness, health promotion, illness, disease management and care of the dying is core to nursing practice. Mastery of competencies is the main focus. Students are provided with opportunities to learn a whole range of nursing skills in addition to acquiring knowledge related to nursing practice. This is achieved through learning in skill lab/simulated labs and clinical environment. Simulation will be integrated throughout the curriculum wherever feasible to enable them to develop competencies before entry into real field of nursing practice. The curriculum embraces competency-based approach throughout the program integrating mastery learning and self-directed learning. Through the educational process the students assimilate and synthesize knowledge, cultivate critical thinking skills and develop care strategies. Competencies that reflect practice standards of Indian Nursing Council (INC) address the areas of cultural diversity, communication technology, teamwork and collaboration, safety, quality, therapeutic interventions and evidence- based practice. They are prepared to provide safe and competent care to patients across life span and influence patient outcomes.

The aim of the undergraduate nursing program is:

1. Prepare graduates to assume responsibilities as professional, competent nurses and midwives at basic level in providing promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services.

2. Prepare nurses who can make independent decisions in nursing situations, protect the rights of facilitate individuals and groups in pursuit of health, function in the hospital, community nursing services and conduct research studies in the areas of nursing practice. They are also expected to assume the role of teacher, supervisor and manager in a clinical / public health setting.

On completion of B.Sc. Nursing degree programme the graduates will be able to:

1. Apply knowledge from physical, biological and behavioral sciences, medicine, including alternative systems and nursing in providing nursing care to individuals, families and communities.

2. Demonstrate understanding of life style and other factors, which affect health of individuals and groups.

3.Provide nursing care based on steps of nursing process in collaboration with the individuals and groups

4. Demonstrate critical thinking skill in making decisions in all situations in order to provide quality care.

5. Utilise the latest trends and technology in providing health care.

6. Provide promotive, preventive and restorative health services in line with the national health policies and programs.

7. Practice within the framework of code of ethics and professional conduct and acceptable standards of practice within the legal boundaries.

8. Communicate effectively with individuals and groups and members of the health team in order to promote effective interpersonal relationships and teamwork.
