Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education offers B.Sc in Forensic Science. The programme is accredited by The Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences (CSoFS) in the United Kingdom. Students who complete the programme will be eligible for CSoFS Associate Membership. The curriculum provides theoretical and practical knowledge in all areas of forensic science and proficiency in laboratory skills such as forensic molecular biology, forensic chemistry, and forensic toxicology. This programme is about forensic science. Students learn about crimes and crime scenes and similar methods and equipment used in the investigation of every crime and all lab techniques and evidence processing techniques. They study the methods of investigation for each type of crime scene and the lab examinations used to identify the main culprit. Forensic Science is the application of science to the study and execution of the law. Forensic Scientists analyse materials to determine whether or not a connection exists between the suspect and the victim or crime scene. Using cutting-edge technology, forensic scientists investigate numerous pieces of evidence discovered at the crime scene and submit scientific findings admissible in court. The software is intended to address evolving trends in forensic science, which is no longer limited to the body and property but has expanded into cyberspace.
With an emphasis on forensic applications and the presentation of expert evidence in criminal trials, the programme prepares graduates for work in forensic laboratories. Graduates would be able to work in a variety of scientific disciplines. Students will also be prepared for further training in the forensic sciences and forensic science due to this degree programme. The vast majority of trained forensic scientists are hired by the Intelligence Bureau, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and other law enforcement agencies. These professionals are essential in protecting public health, enforcing criminal laws and regulations, and resolving civil conflicts.
The programme is broadly grouped into three main verticals:
1. Medical – Medical involves forensic pathology, psychiatry, psychology, forensic medicine, odontology and anthropology.
2. Laboratory – Laboratory vertical includes chemistry, biology, toxicology, ballistics, fingerprints, questioned documents, marks and impressions and computer science.
3. Field Science – Field Science includes crime scene investigation, fire scene investigation, road/rail/aircraft accident scene investigation and investigation into clandestine drug labs.
