Overview

Started in 1984, the Department of Civil Engineering currently offers B.Tech. in Civil Engineering and M.Tech. in Structural Engineering a. Apart from this, the department offers Ph.D. programmes in all the disciplines of Civil Engineering. The department has performed wonderfully well over the past thirty six years and is now recognized as one of the major departments of excellence at Kalasalingam Academy of Research & Education. To support the students in their practical learning journey, the department has excellent infrastructure with Information & Communication Technology (ICT) enabled, smart and video capturing class rooms, well established laboratories, seminar and lecture halls and a well stacked department library. The department houses highly qualified Faculty members with Ph.D. degrees from National University of Singapore, IITs, Anna University and other reputed institutions. The department faculty members have an international exposure in structural, environmental, water resources, transportation and construction engineering & management. The programme is accredited by NBA under Tier-I category of Washington Accord. The programme is also accredited by ABET, an international accreditation body for engineering and technical education. The Department of Civil Engineering puts massive efforts to deliver uncomparable civil engineering education using advanced teaching pedagogy and learning support for undergraduate students. The department provides state of the art research infrastructure for postgraduate and doctoral candidates. The faculty of the B.Tech- Civil Engineering motivates students to think out of the box on a regular basis. This resulted in the development of Low cost simple Fluoride removal unit for Rural Community by Mr. G. Selva Ganesan, Mr. V. Suriya Prakash which won many awards.

Academics

The curriculum is reviewed and revised regularly keeping in mind the latest developments in the field of civil engineering to keep students updated with the global standards. The department also arranges industrial training for students in leading industries such as: L & T Construction Ramapuram, Chennai, Prayojana Constructions, Bangalore, RK Constructions, Bangalore, Tata value homes campus, Mampakkam, Chennai and encourages students to participate in co-curricular and extracurricular activities to ensure a 360 degree development. Kalasalingam has collaborated with the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee, a government body which offers Internship to our students. The department frequently organizes conferences, seminars, guest lectures, workshops, symposiums and training programmes to maximize the impact of classroom education. In addition to this department tie up with industry and obtained KY pipe software for utilization of project purpose. The department has collaboration with UTP, Malaysia under industry/institutional tie-ups.

The centre for building materials at Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education centre promotes the undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral students to pursue their research work in the field structural, transportation, construction etc. The centre aimed to develop and utilize sustainable materials for building construction. The students obtained their TNSCST projects and the faculty member of this centre obtained DST-SEED worth more than two crores which aimed to sensitize the public to know the significance and utilization of geopolymer concrete in building construction. The center has inter, intra collaboration with leading institutes.  The centre offers AICTE faculty training programmes for the faculty members inside and outside the states. This centre has excellent lab facility for doing their research work. This centre promotes the students to publish articles in web of science and scopus indexed journals. The centre offers many consult projects for government agencies and private sectors. The centre developed many community service projects as per their local needs. Students are doing their projects in the domain of life cycle assessment, LEED concept in design etc.

Center for Water Technology

The Centre for Water Technology at Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education is aimed to undertake aid, promote and coordinate systematic and scientific work in all aspects of hydrology, water resources engineering and waste water engineering. The centre has collaborations with National and International fronts such as from NIT-AP, NIT Trichy, Victoria University- Australia and UTP – Malaysia. The centre houses several up to date instruments required for all fundamental water, wastewater, air and soil parameter testing and has produced more than 35 peer reviewed research articles in leading journals in the field of hydrology and environmental engineering. The centre has completed or undergoing funded projects worth more than Rs.30,00,000/- . The center also received KYPIPE software worth US$3500 with industry collaboration. The Centre is contributing to societal welfare by providing consultancy support and extension activities with PWD, Madurai, PWD Tirunelveli and Srivilliputhur Municipality. The center promotes interdisciplinary projects involving IT, ECE, Agriculture and Chemical Departments in newer technologies.
